Cupping Therapy: A Restorative Ritual at Kai
At Kai Urban Retreat, we offer treatments that are both grounding and results-driven. Cupping therapy is one of the most effective ways to release tension, improve circulation and support overall wellbeing—especially when combined with remedial massage.
Led by our skilled Remedial Therapist, David, cupping at Kai is tailored, calming, and designed to meet your body where it’s at.
Meet David
David brings a unique depth of knowledge and care to his treatments. A trained medical doctor with a diploma in aromatherapy, he blends clinical insight with holistic technique. He’s worked in leading wellness destinations including Willow Urban Retreat, Comma, and The Langham.
“I studied cupping after completing my Remedial Massage training,” he explains. “It felt like the natural next step in helping people heal more effectively.”
What Is Cupping?
Cupping involves placing suction cups on the skin to lift the tissue and promote circulation gently. It encourages blood flow, eases tension and supports recovery.
David uses modern plastic cups, which allow for greater control and comfort throughout the treatment.
The Benefits of Cupping (Especially When Combined with Massage)
Cupping enhances the effects of remedial massage by:
Releasing muscle tightness and fascial restriction
Reducing pain and inflammation
Improving circulation and recovery
Increasing range of motion and flexibility
Supporting the nervous system and reducing stress
“Many clients say they feel lighter and more open after a session,” David says. “It’s a release—physically and mentally.”
What to Expect
Cupping is generally not painful, though you may feel a firm pulling sensation during the treatment. David adjusts the pressure based on your comfort.
After your session, you may notice light circular marks where the cups were placed. These are temporary and typically fade within a few days.
Is It Right for You?
Cupping is suitable for most people and can be especially helpful if you experience:
Chronic tension or stiffness
Poor circulation
Stress or fatigue
Postural issues or muscle recovery needs
Treatments are commonly focused on the back, shoulders, neck and chest, but can also include the arms and legs depending on your needs.
How Often Should I Receive Treatment?
For general well-being, monthly sessions may be ideal. If you’re seeking relief from ongoing pain or tightness, David may suggest more frequent visits, such as weekly or fortnightly, until your symptoms improve.
